There are few places more romantic, more stunning, or so custom-made for the backdrop to a wedding ceremony than the beaches of Cyprus. Between the beautiful azure skies, the bright sun shining off sand and sea, and a gentle breeze wafting along the shore, beach weddings in Cyprus truly are something to behold. With the island becoming ever more popular with couples-to-be, the odds are good that, at some point in the future, you’re going to be invited to one or more beach weddings in Cyprus.
But what do you wear for the occasion? It can be a tricky proposition if you’ve never attended one before, as it’s important to walk the middle path between wedding-formal and beach-casual, ideally combining the two into something original, attractive and, above all, comfortable.
Here are a couple of tips to help maximise that beach wedding look.
How formal is it?
Most beach weddings are less formal affairs than church, chapel, or registry office nuptials, but less formal doesn’t mean turning up to the ceremony in a swimsuit and flip-flops… or does it? Remember, it is the bride and groom’s big day. Ask them how dressy they want you to be, and tailor your wardrobe to suit.
Keep it light
In terms of both colour and fabric, this should be your mantra. Choose breathable materials, like a lightweight linen or cotton, something that won’t stick to your skin in the heat. Likewise, light colours are a must – whites, creams and pastels, often with a hint of a darker colour applied as an accent. Not only will you make for a dazzling sight on the white Cyprus sands, but the colours’ reflective properties will keep you cool.
Add some length
You might think that a wedding on the beach is an ideal opportunity to break out that short skirt, or mini-dress, but that's not always the case. Yes, it will be warm under the sun, but there are surprisingly persistent breezes along the shoreline in Cyprus, so we recommend maxi or midi length skirts, so an unexpected gust won’t have you upstaging the bride.
Say no to heels
High heels and sand just don’t mix. By all means take a pair in your suitcase for an evening do, or a party back at the hotel, but on the beach itself you’ll want to wear sandals, or a nice, dressy pair of wedges.
Beach weddings in Cyprus are beautiful affairs. Remember to keep it light and bright, and you won’t go far wrong.
